The Union of Afro-Asian Universities extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Islamic nation, and students of knowledge around the world for the passing of a scholar of Islamic economics and a unique thinker who was known for his generosity in serving his religion and Islamic nation, Professor Dr. Hussein Hamed Hassan, who devoted his life to serving knowledge and its students.
The deceased, God willing, was a member of the Egyptian Shura Council and a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee in 2012.
Dr. Hussein Hamed Hassan is an Egyptian national, holds a PhD from the Faculty of Sharia at Al-Azhar University, an honorary doctorate from Durham University in the United Kingdom, and a Master’s degree in Comparative Law from New York University in the United States. He also holds bachelor’s degrees in law and Sharia from Cairo University and Al-Azhar University in Egypt.
Dr. Hussein worked as a professor at the Faculty of Law, Cairo University, Head of Postgraduate Studies at Muhammad bin Ali Al-Sanussi Al-Kabir University in Libya, the first president of the International Islamic University in Islamabad and one of its prominent founders, advisor to the Pakistani president for Islamic education and Sharia implementation affairs, and was one of the most prominent supporters of defending the issue of occupied Pakistani Kashmir. He also worked as an advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for legal and constitutional affairs, and as director of the Islamic Heritage Revival Center in Makkah Al-Mukarramah. He was also one of the most famous experts and scholars specializing in Islamic jurisprudence, especially in the field of Islamic banking, finance, and Takaful insurance, where he converted many traditional banks into Islamic banks, in addition to transforming the Dubai Financial Market into the first Islamic financial market in the world. Dr. Hussein has presented a number of innovative products with a global character for the Islamic financial industry. Dr. Hussein has chaired the Sharia Jurists Assembly of America, is a member of the European Council for Fatwa, the International Union of Muslim Scholars, the Islamic Fiqh Assembly of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, an expert in the Fiqh Assembly of the Muslim World League, and the Sharia Board of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Financial Institutions (AAOIFI). He also chairs several Sharia boards for several Islamic financial institutions, including the Islamic Development Bank, Dubai Islamic Bank, Al Salam Bank in Bahrain, Algeria and Sudan, Dubai Financial Market, Deutsche Bank, the Liquidity Management Center in Bahrain, and others. Dr. Hussein left a library full of more than 400 books, research papers and articles in several fields such as banking, finance and Islamic insurance. He is considered a pioneer in the field of Islamic banking and finance at the international level. We only say what pleases our Lord, and to Him we shall return. Glory be to the Ever-Living Who does not die. O God, forgive the believing men and women, the Muslim men and women, the living and the dead. O God, reward us for our affliction and replace it with something better. We ask God Almighty to have mercy on the deceased and to grant him a place in His spacious gardens and to inspire his family and relatives with patience and solace.
